Boy Scout High Adventure: Wilderness First Aid Requirements
Because Wilderness First Aid is now required in some fashion by all of the major Boy Scouts of America (BSA) High Adventure Bases, we keep a complete and up-to-date list of current requirements for Philmont Scout Ranch, Florida Sea Base, Northern Tier, Bechtel Summit (home of the National Jamboree), Maine High Adventure, as well as National Capital Area Council's Lenhok'Sin high adventure program.
The list below is current as of April 10, 2023.
Philmont Scout Ranch
Philmont requires that each crew have two participants who have completed Wilderness First Aid and two participants with CPR training. Current certification cards must be presented upon check-in to verify this requirement. This requirement can be met by youth and/or adult participants.
Florida Sea Base
At least one adult leader in each crew must complete Wilderness First Aid and Basic CPR/AED from an agency approved by the American Camping Association or hold a higher professional license such as MD, DO, EMT, RN, LPN or WFR. Multiple crews require multiple trained leaders. Sea Base highly recommends that every adult leader completes WFA and CPR/AED.
Northern Tier
Northern Tier requires that at least one adult leader in each crew present proof of current training in Wilderness First Aid, CPR/AED and Weather Hazards. Northern Tier also recommends at least one adult complete BSA Paddle Craft Safety training.
Summit BSA
Units in the Bikepacking, Pack and Paddle, Polaris ATV, or New River Experience programs must have at least one participant (youth or adult) who has completed CPR and Wilderness First Aid. The Summit strongly suggests two or more individuals attain WFA.
Units in the Summit Experience, Marksman Experience, or James C. Justice National Scout Camp are not required to have a trained individual, but the health and safety team highly recommends at least one participant trained in both.
Maine High Adventure
Maine High Adventure has no formal Wilderness First Aid or CPR requirement, but director Art Morgan stated that "it is STRONGLY recommended that each and every participant have both Wilderness First Aid and CPR training." It is a recommendation, NOT a requirement.
Goshen's Lenhok'sin
For crews on the Lenhok'sin Trail Trek or James River Canoe Trek, one or more crew members must have Wilderness First Aid and CPR/AED as well as Weather Hazards training and Safe Swim Defense.
High Adventure Bases of the Boy Scouts of America are outdoor recreation facilities operated at the national level. Each offers wilderness programs such as canoeing, backpacking or sailing, and opportunities for Scouts to earn the 50-Miler Award. They are administered by the High Adventure Division of the National Council of the BSA.
